Searching on mobile devices like Tablets and Mobile Phones can be tiring. Going through through those blue search results on the move can be excruciating even with the help of voice enabled search apps from the likes of Google and Bing. Several special search apps are being released by developers to make mobile search more easier. The search startup Blekko’s izik mobile search app is one such which gives a unique search experience while searching on tablets and smartphones.

izik’s search results are highly touch friendly and image-driven. Unlike the conventional search apps for mobile devices, most search results display an image. Just like Blekko’s PC browser, izik search app organizes search results into eye-catching tiles. With izik, Blekko has done an excellent job of taking its search technology used for PC based search engine and customizing it for mobile devices. As soon as the app is opened, you can will see a search bar where you can type your search query. The recently trending search queries and latest news can also be accessed by tapping on the two tabs are placed below the search box.

The Search results are grouped in the form of categories like top results, news, images, reviews, etc. to facilitate quick access. These categories are generated by Blekko’s proprietary  ‘Dynamic Inference Graph’ technology. Content in each of the categories can be read through horizontal swipes. Vertical swipes on the search results page displays more number of categories. A simple tap on the category expands it for further browsing. Search results can be pinch zoomed for quick reading on the move. A three bar menu located at the top left of the app lets you to access recent search history and trending search queries.

To the bottom of the app’s home screen is the latest addition for izik’s newer (2.0) version called ‘What’s Nearby?’which lets users to know the nearby restaurants, movie theaters, cafes, filling stations, etc. Interface of the app is good and makes search on the move a more enjoyable experience. But, there are no customization options given to the users. The much desired voice search features too is absent from the app. During my test, I have seen a noticeable lag between the tap on a search result and the moment when information is displayed. Blekko should work to correct these issues in the future versions of izik.
