The much awaited Samsung Galaxy S4 has finally arrived and every analyst is expecting it to beat the sales record of the earlier flagship device from Samsung. But as Samsung consolidates its leadership position in the leadership position in the global smart phone market older rivals are making renewed attempts to chip in at least a small share of the lucrative smart phone market. One of the other handsets that has gained lot of attention in the recent past is the Sony Xperia Z (Xperia Z). Xperia Z could be the last attempt to bring a top notch smart phone into the market to compete with the likes of iPhone and Galaxy smart phones. And Sony has not left any stone unturned to make it look attractive. Let us see which of these handsets scores when pitted with each other.
Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Sony Xperia Z
The two phones, viz. Galaxy S4 and Xperia Z come with impressive designs. Samsung has used the same design it has used for the Galaxy S3 without much modification. As a result, Galaxy S4’s design looks somewhat dated. On the other hand Xperia Z‘s reflective glass surface gives a much premium look to the phone. Each and every port around the phone are sealed well to prevent water and dust from entering the phone. Xperia Z is a clear in terms of design and looks.
Xperia Z still comes with Android 4.1 out of the box which is a disappointment. On the other hand Galaxy S4 sports the more recent Android 4.2 complemented by some additional toppings in the form of custom skins and apps. Despite having the slightly older OS, Xperia Z is easier to use as Sony didn’t alter the core UI of Android much. But a big minus here with Xperia Z is the occasional software malfunctioning. Yes, Sony has still not corrected these minor software related irritants commonly found in its phones even after its re branding.
But Galaxy S4 heavily outperforms Xperia Z in terms of performance and features. The 1.8 GHz octa-core processor (not available in US and UK) makes the phone blazingly quicker than Xperia Z powered by the now commonly found 1.5 GHz quad-core processor. Galaxy S4’s screen gives better color quality, contrast, and viewing angles than the Xperia Z. Primary cameras on both the phones have 13 megapixel sensors but the one mounted on Galaxy S4 has more features like the ability to record HD videos and images simultaneously. When it comes to other features, Samsung gives a big kick in the pants of Sony with its mindblowing new additions like Air gestures, Smart stay, Smart pause, and Smart scroll. You can simply scroll with your eyes and move the photos in the phone by waving your hand in the air. Additional sensors like barometer, thermometer, and hygroscope not found in Xperia Z aid many of new these functionalities in Galaxy S4. Battery backup of both the phones is almost equal. Both the phones offer good value for money. The price of Samsung Galaxy S4 is Rs 41,500/US$ 574 while that of Sony Xperia Zis Rs 37,990/US$ 600.
In Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Sony Xperia Z, the newest Galaxy flagship from Samsung clearly scores over the Xperia Z in terms of features and performance. But Xperia Z has some unique features which are not available in Galaxy S4 like resistance to dust and water and a flashy glass-covered body. So the choice is yours. If you want a no nonsense feature rich phone then go for the Galaxy S4. But if you want a more chic and unique looking smart phone and are not much bothered with the occasional software misbehavior then opt for the Xperia Z.
